How a Promptoria prompt is built

Every prompt is five pieces snapped together: a hook, a quality, a person, the thing they do, and the trouble they do it in. The generator pulls one piece from each list at random, so the pieces were never meant to meet. That collision is the point.

the fog that followed a terrified night-shift nurse who realizes the friendly old woman next door has been dead for twenty years while house-sitting a mansion with too many locked rooms.

Don't like one piece? Click it and type over it. Keep the nurse, swap the mansion for a cruise ship, then hit Copy.

Got a prompt. Now what?

Don't marry the first one. Roll five and keep the prompt that makes you wince or grin. Then ask it three questions: what does this person want, what are they hiding, and what happens if they fail? Write the scene where the secret almost comes out. Ten minutes, no editing, no going back to fix the first line.

Need more than a spark? Name your cast with the name generators (start with fantasy names or elf names), roll a whole person with the character generator, map the beats with the plot generator, or turn a prompt into a scene for two with the roleplay prompt generator. When you have a page you're not sure about, paste it into Rate My Prose for a blunt grade and the paragraph to fix first.

Writing prompt generator FAQ

Is this writing prompt generator free?

Yes. No account, no email. The prompts are mixed in your browser from hand-written word lists. The Write this Story button, which drafts a short story from your prompt with AI, gives you three stories per visit.

How many different prompts can it make?

With All prompts selected, about 20 billion combinations. Each genre has its own smaller lists, and Fantasy alone still gives you roughly 88 million.

Can I change part of a prompt?

Yes. Click any piece of the prompt and type over it, then press Copy. The copy includes your edits.

Which genres can I filter by?

Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery and Thriller, Romance, Comedy, Historical, Cozy, Kids and Bedtime. All prompts mixes every list together, which is where the strangest stories come from.

Does Promptoria use AI to write the prompts?

No. The prompts come from word lists people wrote, combined at random. AI only runs when you press Write this Story.

What should I do once I have a prompt?

Ask what the character wants, what they're hiding and what they lose if they fail, then write the scene where the secret nearly slips. Ten minutes is enough to find out if the idea has legs.
